  • How do I renew a domain name?
  • The domain name is valid for three years, after which it can be renewed by paying a renewal fee via the Domain name renewal link on the left-hand side of the front page. You can renew a .fi domain name no earlier than six months before the expiration date.
If a company or an association who is the holder of a domain name has closed down, the domain name must not be renewed but transferred to the possible new owner. A link to the transfer instructions can be found on the Homepage, on the right hand side.
FICORA will send renewal instructions to the addresses provided by the domain name holder, well before the expiration deadline.
  • How can I transfer a domain name to a new holder?
  • When a fi-domain name is transferred from one holder to another, the transfer must be done through the fi-domain name service.
The transfer is a two-stage process. The first stage involves consenting to the transfer and creating a security code. In the second stage, the security code created when consent was provided is used when transferring the fi-domain name.
In order to be able to transfer the fi-domain name and use our fi-domain name service, the current holder of the domain name must first register as a user of the fi-domain name service, in which case, the holder will have a user ID and a list of passwords that he or she can use to log on to the service and initiate the transfer process. If this is not the case, the holder must first register with the service. It is also possible, however, for the holder to authorise an agent to register with the service and consent to the transfer on the holders behalf.
If the new holder wants to transfer the fi-domain name, he or she must also register as a user of the fi-domain name service. The fi-domain name can, however, also be transferred by the ISP, e.g., on behalf of the new owner. It should be borne in mind that the ISP cannot consent to the transfer on behalf of the holder of the domain name.
    To transfer a domain name:
    1. The current holder, or the holders agent, logs on to the domain name service using the user ID and password list provided. If the fi-domain name to be transferred is not shown under the drop-down menu on the page that opens, the option Link domain name to user ID should be selected first from the drop-down menu. At this stage, a special authorisation key is also required for linking the domain name to the user ID.
Next, the option Give domain name transfer consent" is selected. A security code is created when consenting to the transfer; it can be a word or any random string of characters that the user has thought up. The security code is divulged to the new holder of the domain name. The details of the transfer consent are saved in the service.
    2. The new holder or the new holders ISP logs in the service and selects the option Apply for transfer of domain name". During the transfer, the service will prompt the user for various details, such as the security code created at the time the transfer was consented to and the details of the name server for the fi-domain name.
The transfer fee (43 euros) is paid by the new holder of the fi-domain name.
