  • What is a domain name?
  • A domain name is an alphanumeric name used only to identify a certain computer (for example, a Web server or mail server) in Internet. The domain names allow internet users to write a name, as mycompany.com.ec, to identify a numeric address as 157.100.45.204. The purpose of the domains is to allow common users connected to the Internet to find places in the Web and to send e-mail to addresses with familiar names, as "mycompany.com.ec or "mytrademark.com.ec", without having to memorize those numeric addresses that in fact are those that locate the computers or servers on the Internet.
  • If my company is not on the internet, do I need a domain name?
  • Technically you do not need a domain, however eventually you or your company will be on the internet and it is advisable to register as soon as possible your domain name to avoid inconveniences in the future.
  • I do not have a web page; can I register a domain name?
  • It is not necessary to have a web page to register a domain. However, it is advisable to register a domain name so that in the future when you decide to have a web page, you already have a domain name and avoid inconveniences that the name of the domain that you want is no longer available. Also, the domain name can be that you want it for your email address or for the name of a server, as example myname@mycompany.com.ec.
  • Are there other options instead of ".com.ec" ?
  • Most of the domain names are registered under the second level ".com.ec, however, there are other levels available for educational entities, government entities, financial entities, non for profit organizations. For the different alternatives, you can check Domain Types .
  • I already have a domain, can I change it ?
  • If you already have a domain name registered, you cannot change it. However, if you want, you can register a new one, without refund or transfer of the fees paid by for the original one.
  • I changed my internet service provider (ISP), what should I do ?
  • If you already have a domain name registered, and you changed or are in the process of changing your internet service provider or web hosting provider, you should communicate to us the new information of DNS primary and secondary server. This information is provided by your new internet provider.
  • I do not have a server or DNS, what can I do ?
  • If you have a web page or if you are in the process of creating one, the information of DNS primary and secondary server is supplied by your internet service provider o web hosting provider. If you do not have a web page, you can instruct to NIC.EC to assign a non active DNS, however in the future when you have your web page or want to use your email address with your domain name, you will have to instruct us to change the new DNS information, otherwise your web page will not be accessed or your email address will not be active.
  • How can I get the information of DNS / Nameservers?
  • Usually this information is provided by your Internet or Web service provider with whom you use the domain for email or web page hosting.
  • Can I register a domain name and have the hosting in another country?
  • Yes, you may register an .ec domain name and have the hosting of your web page anywhere in the world, which does not affect the registration or activation of the domain name.
  • How do I know when a domain expires ?
  • In the domain name Whois you will find the domain expiration date.
  • Can I renew for more than one year?
  • Yes, domain names may be renewed for 1, 2 , 3 , 5 or 10 years.
  • How may I change the Administrative Contact of a domain?
  • Send the Registration Form and the Registry Agreement, signed by the Registrant, or the new administrator with a letter signed by the Registrant asking for and authorizing the changes. Contact us for more information.
