.CL Domain General FAQ Chile FAQ - What is a domain name?
- A domain name refers to the character identification of hierarchical structure that identifies and locates a computer on the Internet and corresponds to the IP address of this computer. For example, the name uchile.cl groups all computers of the University of Chile, while "anakena.dcc.uchile.cl" assigns to a computer with the name "anakena" in the Department of Computer Sciences (part of the University of Chile).
- Who can obtain a domain name? For what do you use a domain name?
- A domain name is a means that allows you to implement certain services, such as e-mail, a webpage, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), electronic commerce, etc through the internet. When a person registers a domain name at NIC Chile, he/ she obtains the technical possibility to connect a domain name with a specific computer (chosen by this person).
- What does .cl , that appears at the end of a domain name, mean?
- The termination .cl is the suffix that groups all domain names that are registered in the Republic of Chile.
- What is the difference between .cl, .com, .net and .org?
- Technically, there is no difference. Administratively, the domain .cl represents domains registered in Chile by NIC Chile. On the other side the domains ".com", ".net", ".org" are general (without a geographic location) and are registered and coordinated by different organizations throughout the whole world. At the beginning they grouped commercial organizations by using the suffix .com, network services with .net and organizations with .org. However, nowadays this classification isnt relevant anymore.
- What are subdomains?
- A subdomain is a domain that is part of another domain. For example, dcc.uchile.cl is a subdomain of uchile.cl.
The register of .cl domain names registers only the space of subdomains of .cl. Every registrar of a domain name can create subdomains under this name for free. - If my company isnt on the internet, do I have to register a domain name?
- Yes and no. Technically seen it doesnt matter. But there are some reasons to register a domain name. Its likely that your company will connect with the internet in the future and it will be an unpleasant surprise if the domain name is already registered by someone else.
- I just registered a domain name, where can I put my homepage?
- NIC Chile only offers the service of registering a domain name. You can use this domain name for a website or for email addresses, for example. If you want to have a website, you have to enter a contract with a company that offers hosting services. NIC Chile doesnt offer this hosting service.
