  • What is needed for a domain name to be used?
  • Before a domain name can be used for a website, e-mail or other services, a number of name servers must be set up for it. The web server(s) and mail server(s) will also need to have been set up. In most cases, these services are organized by your hosting provider (for a fee).
  • Do I have to be Swiss to register .ch domain names?
  • No. You can register a .ch domain name without being Swiss and without living in Switzerland or having your business based in Switzerland. The corollary of this, however, is that when you encounter a .ch domain name, the individual or organization behind it is not necessary Swiss and may have nothing at all to do with Switzerland.
  • What is the minimum data required for registering a domain name?
  • The minimum data required is that of the domain holder and the billing contact.
The holder is to be considered as the "owner" of the domain name. The billing contact has to pay the fees. It is possible for the domain holder and the billing contact to be the same person or organization, but they can also be different.
  • Is there a maximum limit to the number of domain names I am permitted to register?
  • No. There are no limits on the number of domain names that any one individual or organization is permitted to register. Note, however, that if you submit a large number of new applications all at once, the Registry has the right to handle them in stages. In other words, it has the right to wait until domain names already registered, before completing the registration of additional domain names.
  • What are the main principles of registration?
  • The main principles of registration include:
    * Equal treatment: Unless provided otherwise in these GTC and in the applicable law, SWITCH will handle requests for registration on the same conditions, in accordance with the same rules and principles.
    * First come, first served: Registration of a domain name for which several valid requests are received will be based on chronological order (first come, first served).
    * Legitimacy: A request for registration of a domain name represents to SWITCH the binding assurance of the applicant and/or holder that the registration to the holder of the domain name indicated in the request can be made legally and that the holder is entitled to use the domain name.
